In addition to building houses, most middle schoolers probably have other things on their minds. But unlike any other middle schooler you’ve seen before, Luke Thill, a 13-year-old from Dubuque, Iowa, is unique. The backyard of his parents is now home to the imaginative and resourceful young man’s very own tiny house. He spent about $1,500 USD on the project, and now Luke is in his tiny cottage living his dream. Please enter to see what it looks like inside.
Luke Thill I feel confident in saying that Luke is different from many of his 13-year-old peers. This young man chose to keep himself occupied in a different and more “traditional” way in a time of iPads, smart phones, gadgets, and X Boxes. His motivation for constructing a small house, as he explains on his YouTube channel, came from a summer of boredom. Luke was pretty sure of how he was going to carry out his plan after doing a lot of in-depth research.
Thill The Process It took him around a year to acquire the resources and cash required to construct the house. Luke ran errands for anyone in the neighborhood who required assistance and cut lawns to earn money. He also started an online fundraising campaign. For example, an electrician Luke knew helped him install the electricity in return for Luke cleaning out his garage.
About 75% of the materials Luke used were recycled, many of which were items still lying around his grandmother’s home. The house’s entrance was a gift from an uncle’s friend.
Thill The 89-square-foot house is 10 feet long and 5 1/2 feet wide. It has electricity, but no plumbing, which means there isn’t any water or a bathroom… yet. The Des Moines Register quoted him as saying, “I liked the minimalism.”. “I also wanted to own a home without taking on a sizable mortgage. Luke has produced a number of online video clips and posted them in which he discusses his project in response to the growing interest in the tiny house.
Thill As you might expect, Luke also got some assistance from his parents with the building and with money. However, Luke’s father Greg made sure that he would fund and construct the majority of his project on his own, as well as pay for the rest of it. Greg told The Des Moines Register that the experience gave kids “a chance to do something other than play video games or play sports.”.

Dream of a Teenager.
The home is in many ways a teen’s paradise, a place where you can unwind and hang out. It has a loft with a bed, a microwave, and a TV. Even a barbecue and flowers are located in the backyard. Luke typically works on his homework at his new home after school, where he also spends some nights during the week.
For when he starts college, Luke already plans to construct a slightly larger home. Additionally, he wants to encourage others to pursue their aspirations.
