In all the years I’ve volunteered at shelters and written about dogs, I’ve heard plenty of stupid reasons to abandon a dog, but each time I’ve heard someone say they could have done something like that. I’m shocked at that.

The story of an adorable dog named Sadie adds another very silly reason to my list. That’s because the backyard fence was broken. Yes, you read that right…a fence.

Many people get pets without fully understanding the responsibilities that come with them, and then decide to abandon them after just a few inconveniences. It’s as if they are used products rather than living, breathing companions.

This is Sadie’s story, and fortunately it has a happy ending thanks to some wonderful people who genuinely care about dogs.

A cute dog named Sadie

Two-year-old Sadie ended up living at a shelter after her owners simply decided that they didn’t want to take care of her anymore.

“Sadie’s owners didn’t want to fix their backyard fence, so Sadie kept escaping. Instead of wanting to fix the problem, they chose to surrender her,” Madeline Bracken, a volunteer at the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter in Texas, told Newsweek

After living with her owners for about two years, Sadie was simply surrendered to a shelter. She didn’t want to keep the fence in her garden as high as the owners needed to prevent escape.

Her owners told the shelter that Sadie was an Alaskan Husky/Border Collie mix, but because she was so small, the shelter thought she was more of a Husky/Corgi mix. It is said that there is When it comes to Huskies, they are essentially little Houdinis. They love to jump over fences or dig under fences to escape, but as a dedicated owner you need to be aware of that and deal with it.

Monica Salmeron, the shelter’s animal control officer, even tried to give the owners some very simple and inexpensive solutions to fix their fence, but they simply did not want to do it.

Sadie was heartbroken, terrified, and struggling to adapt to a life in the shelter.

“Sadie doesn’t want to be there. It’s loud from all the barking, and she’s alone 90 percent of the time, when you can really tell she’s just a family dog,” Bracken said.

This experience was very difficult for her as she loves cuddles and is a very affectionate dog. This little girl wanted her family to love her as much as she loves everyone. Many people offered to come to the shelter and adopt him, but for some reason that never happened.

After hearing Sadie’s heartbreaking story, Mr. Brekin decided to do something and created a video about this sweet little girl who has been waiting for him forever.

New forever home

The video quickly went viral, giving Sadie new hope of finding the right person.

“She is a cuddle bug who is easy to walk on leash. She loves people and gets along well with other dogs. She is even house-trained. Sadie is fixed and ready to go,” Bracken said in the video.

She also mentioned that Sadie was put through temperament testing, which she passed with flying colors.

@thetrashytexan MEET SADIE! She came into the animal shelter because her owner didn’t want to maintain their backyard to the level necessary to prevent a small dog from escaping. We were told she is an Alaskan Husky and Collie mix BUT this girl is LITTLE! We are guessing she’s more of a husky/CORGI mix! Almost 2 years old. Need updated rabies vaccine. She is fixed. Good with kids. Good with other dogs. #AdoptDontShop #adoptdontshop🐾 #DogShelter ♬ original sound – TheTrashyTexan 🗑♻️🌍

“She cuddles on your lap even though she’s on the larger end of a small dog and likes to follow people around the animal shelter when given the chance to get out,” Bracken added.

Sadie deserved a miracle, and she finally got one!

After the video was posted on TikTok, and Newsweek did an article about her, the Glenn Heights Animal Shelter in Texas received over 81 calls asking about Sadie.

By the end of the day, Sadie was already at her new forever home.
