The mother of a young girl who was kidnapped by her in July 2017 has been identified thanks to her appearance on the Unsolved Mysteries reboot on Netflix. Kayla Unbehaun, who was nine years old at the time of the kidnapping, was found in Asheville, North Carolina, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Her mother, Heather Unhebhaun, was detained after being accused of removing her from South Elgin, Illinois, in 2017.

When Kayla’s non-custodial mother took her, she was only nine years old.

Local news sources claim that on July 5, when Kayla’s father went to pick up his daughter from her mother’s house, he was unable to locate her. On July 4, Heather allegedly packed up her car and left with Kayla. Since Kayla vanished, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has posted a picture of her as a nine-year-old online along with an age-progression picture. To raise awareness, a Facebook page was established, and occasionally a local news story about her disappearance would run. Additionally, Kayla made an appearance on the Unsolved Mysteries reboot on Netflix, and it was her appearance on the program that resulted in her rescue.

A store owner who recently watched an episode of the show reportedly saw Kayla and called the police. This is according to WSOC-TV.

Authorities detained Kayla, who is currently 15 years old, and arrested Heather. “Kayla being home safe makes me incredibly happy. I would like to express my gratitude to the South Elgin Police Department, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and all law enforcement organizations that helped with her case. I also want to express my gratitude to each and every one of the fans of the “Bring Kayla Home” Facebook page, who helped to spread awareness and continue to tell her story. In order to rekindle our relationship and navigate this new chapter, we humbly request privacy, according to Kayla’s father. In anticipation of extradition to Illinois, Heather is currently being held on a $250,000 bond. I’m so happy Kayla made it back home, even though it will take some time for everyone to make up for the lost years. The healing process must start right away.
