That not all heroes wear capes can be seen in the story of a valiant uncle named Derrick Byrd.
It is not surprising that he has been hailed as a hero by his family for risking his life to save the lives of his niece and nephew.
When the fire started in the family’s Aberdeen, Washington, home, Kayla, Derrick’s sister, and her three kids were among the victims.
Derrick grabbed his nephews and jumped out the window from the second floor after realizing how quickly the house could burn down while holding them in his arms.
His 8-year-old niece Mercedes saw her mother drop from the roof but didn’t follow.
Without hesitation, Derrick went back inside the house to free his kidnapped niece.
Once inside, the heat from the flames was felt on his face, but saving Mercedes was more important.
He said, “I felt like it was scorching me.
“I grabbed her and just carried her out as fast as I could, ripping off my shirt to cover her face so she wouldn’t breathe in any smoke. ”.
Derrick suffered second and third-degree burns to his face, back, and arms as a result of his selfless act. He says he would undergo rehabilitation again if necessary, even though it took time and caused him great pain.
“I didn’t care that I got burned, even though. I would rather burn myself than her. She’s not very old. She still benefits greatly from many factors. To KOMO-TV, he said, “She’s a nice kid.”.
“I’d rush back in there and do it again, even if I got severely burned or killed. ”.
Derrick said, “I can’t say a hero,” in response to people calling him a hero. Simply put, I wouldn’t allow my nieces and nephews to pass away. ”.
