Julia Louis-Dreyfus recalled how her mother’s uncomplicated act of kindness helped her during a trying bereavement period.
Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has opened up about losing a pregnancy when she was in her late 20s, calling it “devastating” and a “complete nightmare.”.
On the Wiser Than Me podcast, Louis-Dreyfus talked about the emotional toll losing her unborn child had on her and her husband Brad Hall.
When she was about 28 years old, she got pregnant for the first time, and she said she was thrilled.
“My pregnancy was straightforward. I had strong, feminine feelings. ”.
My husband Brad and I later discovered that the unborn child would not survive, which was relatively late in the pregnancy. ”.
“So that was emotionally devastating as you can imagine, but it got worse because I developed an infection that landed me in the hospital,” the actress continued, calling the experience “a complete nightmare.”. ”.
Louis-Dreyfus claimed that Judith Louis-Dreyfus arrived by air to look after her.
She was eventually sent home to recover after a few days and was eventually released from the hospital. She was still unable to get out of bed, though.
“But my mother prepared the food.
”.
She made this amazing, warm chili in a cast iron skillet and served it with cornbread. ”.
When her mother and husband entered the room and set the tray at the foot of her bed, she was unable to eat it.
That cornbread and the chili had such a wonderful aroma, she observed. ”.
“In actuality, the house, the room, and my heart were all filled because I was unable to eat.
”.
I couldn’t eat solid food yet, but it made no difference.
She called it “the best meal ever,” even though she couldn’t eat it. ”.
According to the Veep actor, she has always connected eating and cooking with her mother and her family as a whole.
It was “comforting” for her mother to simply make the lunch during a difficult time.
She said, “This is one of my favorite food-related memories, despite the fact that it has a bit of an odd kicker.
”.
She had endured a number of agonizing experiences over the years besides Louis-Dreyfus’ miscarriage.
The actress and comedian revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in 2017.
She told Entertainment Tonight, “I’ve faced many personal obstacles, including losses of loved ones and my battle with cancer. ”.
She claimed that working on Veep had helped her get through the diagnosis and that she wasn’t sure how she would have handled it “had I not had this really close intimate relationship with all of these people.”
“It was like being on a sports team … and that was the most buoying thing, to constantly be coming back to. ”.
“It gave me something to laser focus on during my illness, and I needed to laser focus (on something) beyond my illness, so it was a life saver. ”.
Louis-Dreyfus revealed in October 2018 that she was cancer free.
In a 2019 interview, she said going through six rounds of chemotherapy helped her work out what really mattered in her life.
