Courteney Cox became a worldwide celebrity overnight after landing the role of Monica Geller on Friends.

Her life altered dramatically when she became not just famous but also immensely wealthy. Cox’s career was on the rise when she was cast in Friends. The now 57-year-old was one of the stars in a music video that went viral years ago.

So, how did Courteney Cox enjoy playing Monica? What is she up to now? Here’s everything you need to know about her.

Knowing that you are on your way to something huge must be a high point for many performers and actresses. For some, this happens throughout their childhood, while for others, it takes years of hardship and fighting before they receive their break in their 30s or 40s.

However, once that great breakthrough occurs, things usually just keep going up. And one could easily conclude such was the situation with Courteney Cox.

The Alabama native was cast in Bruce Springsteen’s music video for “Dancing in the Dark,” which launched her Hollywood career. Soon after, she was cast as Monica Geller on the renowned sitcom Friends, and her life was permanently changed. Courteney Cox has recently worked on various other projects, and she has formed a great family and welcomed her children over the years.

At the same time, she’s been outspoken about plastic surgery and facelifts, which she’s recently reversed her position on. This is everything there is to know about Courteney “Monica Geller” Cox!

Courteney Cox was born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 15, 1964. Courteney and Richard Lewis Cox are the parents of four children. She was teased at school when she was younger because of her surname.

“I hated my last name, but then when my dad passed away I thought, ‘I’m going to own this and keep this going,’ because there [was no one else] in the family to keep it alive,” she told Howard Stern.

Her parents split when she was ten years old. Courteney Cox went on to live with her mother and, eventually, her stepfather, but the divorce remained with her.

In an interview, Cox stated that her parents’ divorce was one of her earliest – if not the first – memories. In terms of what she feels she owes her parents, she stated, “my mum wasn’t a go-getter so I am thankful that I was able to witness that and be completely the opposite.”

Courteney Cox did not envision a career in acting from an early age. Instead, she aspired to be an architect. She attended Mount Vernon College to study architecture but dropped out to travel to New York City, where she began modeling for a job. She also worked at a music agency at the same time.

Courteney’s modeling career didn’t last long, but it wasn’t for want of talent. She quickly turned her talents to acting. Courteney Cox made her big break in 1985, at the age of 21, although it wasn’t in a film or a modeling job, but in a music video.

Director Brian De Palma had been hired to produce and direct the music video for Bruce Springsteen’s big hit “Dancing In The Dark.”

Cox’s big break came when she was cast by Brian De Palma in the video for “Dancing in the Dark.” It was filmed during Springsteen’s concert at the St. Paul Civic Center in Minnesota on June 29, 1984, and Courteney Cox got the role of an adoring fan in the front row.

Toward the end of the video, “The Boss,” who was alleged to be ignorant that Cox was a “fake” fan, called Courteney up on stage. They began dancing to famed artist Clarence Clemons’ stunning saxophone solo.

However, Courteney Cox was dissatisfied with her performance in the “Dancing in the Dark” video.

“That was not good dancing on my part,” she said. “I would only [recreates] that as a joke.”

“Dancing In The Dark” is Bruce Springsteen’s first video to receive widespread airplay on MTV. As a result, Cox’s screen time was extensive, which aided her in her quest of a successful career. She barely appeared for approximately 20 seconds in the video, but it was enough to get her noticed. Courteney Cox appeared in the film Misfits of Science the same year, and two years later, she landed her first major part.

She appeared in the popular comedy Family Ties, and in the early 1990s, she added many smaller roles to her repertoire, including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, in which she co-starred with Jim Carrey.

Sure, Courteney Cox was on her way to a successful acting career, but what happened in 1995 was completely unexpected.

Marta Kauffman and David Crane were working on a new show about six friends living in New York at the time.Friends was a reality show, and Courteney Cox played Monica Geller, who was little neurotic and extremely competitive.

Kauffman and Crane began working on the project in 1993. It aired on September 22nd, and it was bound to be a success from the outset.

Friends is still regarded as one of the most successful comedies of all time, having aired for ten seasons and 236 episodes.

More than 50 million Americans tuned in to witness the conclusion. Courteney Cox, who co-starred with Jennifer Aniston as Rachel, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe, Matt LeBlanc as Joey, Matthew Perry as Chandler, and David Schwimmer as Ross, rose to international fame as a result of her portrayal.

“Let’s face it, she’s adorable and intelligent and really together. She is Monica,” Marta Kauffman said in 1995, referring to Courteney Cox’s responsible and compulsively tidy character Monica on the show.

“I love Monica, because not only is she a grown-up, and that’s good for people to see, but I can bring more of my own personality to her, and I’ve never really been able to do that before,” Cox explained. “She can be goofy and angry and sarcastic and a little bit naughty. People think of her sort as the goody-goody and then prude on the show, but I think she has more sex than any of the others.”

Courteney Cox noticed a lot of herself in her character, which turned out to be legendary. And, like Monica on Friends, she is what she calls a “neat freak” in real life.

“I don’t use a lint brush or anything, and I don’t iron, but I could easily pick lint off of someone else. I was doing, I think it was The John Stewart Show and I was picking things off of him and I thought ‘oh my god, I’m just like Monica. This is too scary,’” Cox added.

Friends became a global success, and Courteney and her co-stars were lavishly compensated. According to reports, the Friends cast earned a whopping $1 million per episode during the latter seasons.

Even though the last episode aired 17 years ago, the cast is still reported to earn around $20 million each year just from repeats. According to The Independent, this is because they receive 2% of the show’s syndication revenue. Netflix reportedly paid between $80-$100 million to keep the show on its platform until 2019.

As of today, Courteney Cox has a net worth of around $150 million.

Of course, money makes everything easier. But, at the time they shot Friends, Courteney Cox was dealing with a personal crisis. All of the other cast members received Emmy nominations at some point during the show’s run, save for Courteney Cox.

“Sure. Yeah, it always hurt my feelings,” Cox told Howard Stern. “When every single cast member was nominated but me, it definitely hurt my feelings. I was happy for everybody, and then when it was finally like, ‘Oh, I’m the only one?’ It hurt.”

“I want them to win, I just also want to be part of I’ve never wanted to take anything away from anyone,” she added. “I just sometimes want to be included in certain things. And these girls on the show and the guys, everyone deserved every [nomination].”

Courteney Cox’s contributions on Friends may not have received an Emmy. Moving forward, though, she would receive recognition for her multiple exceptional performances.

Following her time on Friends, Courteney Cox went on to work on various television shows, most notably Cougar Town. Cox played Jules Cobb in 102 episodes between 2009 and 2015, and she’d be honored for her work this time.

Cox received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical for her work on Cougar Town in 2010. In 2021, the actress and her Friends co-stars were nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) for their work on the Friends reunion special.

Courteney Cox is still working in television today. According to IMDB, she is now in post-production for the upcoming television series Shining Vale.

Courteney Cox has not only become a global superstar, but also a wife and mother throughout the years. She married actor David Arquette in 1999, and the couple had daughter Coco Arquette in 2004.

Their marriage, however, ended in divorce in 2013, and since then, Cox has dated musician and record producer Johnny McDaid, well known as the singer of the band Snow Patrol.

Rumors regarding Courteney Cox getting botox and plastic surgery have surfaced throughout the years. And she said it was true in 2017.

Cox told New Beauty that she has a lot of fillers, but that the industry of cosmetic surgery and enhancing your face through various surgical procedures is insane.

“Well, what would end up happening is that you go to a doctor who would say, ‘You look great, but what would help is a little injection here or filler there.’ So you walk out and you don’t look so bad and you think, no one noticed—it’s good,” Courteney Cox said.

“Then somebody tells you about another doctor: ‘This person’s amazing. They do this person who looks so natural.’

You meet them and they say, ‘You should just do this.’ The next thing you know, you’re layered and layered and layered. You have no idea because it’s gradual until you go, ‘Oh sh*t, this doesn’t look right.’ And it’s worse in pictures than in real life. I have one friend who was like, ‘Whoa, no more!’ I thought, I haven’t done anything in six months, I didn’t realize.”

However, Courteney Cox ultimately determined that the greatest thing to do is to be yourself, no matter what. As a result, she proceeded to dissolve all of her fillers.

Because of her celebrity prominence, Cox may unknowingly serve as a role model for others. As a result, seeing her Instagram, where she frequently photographs without makeup, is quite encouraging.

“I’m as natural as I can be. I feel better because I look like myself. I think that I now look more like the person that I was, I hope I do,” Cox said.

“Things are going to change. Everything’s going to drop. I was trying to make it not drop, but that made me look fake. You need movement in your face, especially if you have thin skin like I do. Those aren’t wrinkles—they’re smile lines. I’ve had to learn to embrace movement and realize that fillers are not my friend. “

Courteney Cox gave a rare sight of herself in the future in 2022. Many of her followers were taken aback when the Friend’s star used an app to add ten years to her appearance.

”I probably won’t wear my hair like this …’ Cox wrote in the caption.

Courtney Cox, like many other Hollywood celebrities, has undergone cosmetic surgery. In 2019, she admitted to taking lip fillers since she “wasn’t happy” with herself and how she looked.

But the injections didn’t change how she felt about herself, so she stopped.

”I didn’t realize it until one day I kind of stepped back and went, ‘Oh s***. I don’t look like myself,’” she mentioned.

Luckily, she now feels better than ever.

”So now I just embrace who I am and getting older with what God gave me, not what I was trying to change,’ she said. I kind of own everything. And the things that I am not as comfortable with myself, they’re things that I continue to work on to grow and change,” Cox said.

And her posting a photo of her ‘old’ filtered face demonstrates that Courtney has finally come to terms with her age and shape.

More celebrities should be more accepting of aging; it’s a natural aspect of being human. It’s not anything we should be ashamed of or hide. Thank you for demonstrating it, Courtney!
