A young man recently showed an interesting find to a friend while sorting through his deceased grandparents’ belongings.
Until they found some information online, the two were unable to determine what these metal objects might be.
Most likely from the 1940s or 1950s, the metal sticks are in fact nutcrackers that were used to pry the actual nut from its shell. The edible part of any nut can be reached with their assistance, but they are particularly useful when eating chestnuts.
Similar sets of seafood tools that included picks for extracting the meat from shellfish as well as tools for breaking open the shells of those shellfish frequently included nutscrackers like this one.
Etsy A matching wooden bowl made to resemble a chestnut was frequently available with the nutcrackers. Many of us and our grandparents shared the same tools in our homes, as well as the wonderful memories they evoke!
