Bear, a Cane Corso dog, spent nearly a year wandering the streets of Mobile, Alabama, with his head trapped in a plastic box. This heartbreaking situation left him terrified and made any attempts at rescue exceedingly difficult. His large size and fearfulness meant that traditional traps were ineffective, creating a formidable challenge for rescuers.

A Coordinated Rescue Effort

The rescue mission for Bear was a significant undertaking. Animal control officers from the City of Mobile Animal Services and the Mobile County Animal Shelter collaborated in a comprehensive effort to save him. Bear, initially spotted multiple times with a large trash can lid stuck on his head, had likely become ensnared while scavenging for food.

Surviving for so long with such an obstruction was nothing short of miraculous, as it severely impeded his ability to eat and drink properly. After months of suffering, a compassionate resident alerted the authorities, prompting a massive rescue operation.

Overcoming Obstacles

The initial attempt to remove the box from Bear’s head was successful, but the frightened dog managed to escape before they could secure him with a leash. The rescue team, undeterred, continued their efforts, involving multiple people and resources. Eventually, they were able to catch Bear and transport him to the city’s shelter.

Martin Miller, a rescue volunteer, shared the positive update on social media: “The staff absolutely LOVE him and he is being treated like a king. He is very sweet and has a long happy life ahead of him.”

A New Chapter

Following his rescue, Bear was placed on a stray hold for a few days before being available for adoption. During his time at the shelter, Bear’s personality began to shine through, and he formed a bond with one of the volunteers, Martin Miller. Recognizing the unique connection, the shelter decided to facilitate Bear’s adoption by Martin.

Robert Bryant, Director of the City of Mobile Animal Services, noted, “Trying to find a good home for a dog that’s garnered this much publicity is always a big deal. There’s gonna be a ton of people that wanna take him home. And in this particular case, we got to thinking about it, and really, who better than one of the team members that spent so much time trying to get him off the streets in the first place.”

A Bright Future

Bear is now a beloved member of the Miller family, and his story continues to inspire. He will remain closely connected to the shelter and rescue community, serving as an ambassador for the City of Mobile Animal Services. His new role will help promote the adoption of stray animals and raise awareness about their plight.

Bear’s journey from a life of hardship to one of love and security is a testament to the power of compassion and dedication. With his new family and a supportive community around him, Bear is poised to experience the happiness he truly deserves.
