a good start
Skye Kastner’s story began in the Galveston County Jail where, against all odds, she made her way in the world. Sky’s life was unconventional from the start. His mother, who was in prison when he was born, did not play a significant role in his upbringing.
But her father made the bold decision to raise Skye as a single parent. He got her out of prison and started a new chapter with her in heaven. Despite the difficult circumstances, she provided him with love, support and guidance throughout his upbringing.
determination in the face of adversity
Skye’s childhood was marked by frequent moves, but her determination to attend Harvard never wavered. He developed ambitions and worked hard to achieve his goals. Last week, Skye’s hard work paid off with a third place at Conroe High School and acceptance into the prestigious Harvard University to study law.
Interestingly, Sky’s application letter to Harvard began with a powerful statement: “I was born in prison.” This courageous declaration encapsulates her resilience and determination to overcome her past and build a brighter future.
Nurturing Potential through Mentorship
Aspan’s intellectual abilities were evident from an early age. He was academically gifted and had a passion for learning from an early age. The teachers at Reeves Elementary recognized her potential and believed that with additional mentoring, Sky could truly flourish.
Meet Mona Hamby who has joined the CISD Project Mentors to provide guidance. When Mona met Skye, she was impressed by his intelligence, determination and love of learning. Their bond grew stronger when they realized they didn’t know their mother. Mona’s leadership extends beyond academia. She advised Sky to get her first pair of glasses, get her hair done at the beauty salon, and have fun in her free time. Through their relationship, Skye discovered new opportunities and perspectives that have shaped her into the amazing person she is today.
A transformative journey to Harvard
After visiting the campus with Mona and her husband, Skye’s desire to attend Harvard in 2022 became even stronger. Looking for advice on the application, he turned to Boston University professor James Wallace for help.
Under Professor Wallace’s tutelage, he mastered the art of telling his story in a realistic and compelling way. Sky has shared its unique journey, challenges and triumphs and created an app that stands out from the crowd.
