In a distressing incident in June 2018, a man from Indiana, USA, made a shocking decision regarding his two beloved dogs, Cosmo and Sam. Despite the dogs being happy and healthy companions for almost a decade, the owner decided to have them euthanized. Cosmo, a small Labrador Retriever mix, and Sam, a Pointer, were senior dogs who had shared a strong bond with their owner.
The reason behind this devastating choice was the owner’s plan to move in with his girlfriend, who had allergies to dogs. Consequently, he deemed the dogs as unnecessary in his new life arrangement. Rather than exploring alternative solutions or surrendering them to a shelter, he opted for what is known as “convenience euthanasia,” a term used when pets no longer fit into their owner’s lifestyle.
A Compassionate Vet’s Stand
Thankfully, the veterinarian at the local clinic refused to carry out the euthanasia request. Recognizing the dogs’ good health and vibrant spirits, the vet asserted that ending their lives was unjustified. The refusal stemmed from a principle shared by veterinary professionals: to euthanize animals only when necessary to alleviate suffering.
Cosmo and Sam were then referred to Begin Again Rescue Co (BARC), a non-profit dog rescue organization based in Valparaiso, Indiana. Here, they received care and support from dedicated volunteers who helped them recover from the trauma of abandonment.
Recovery and Resilience
Despite their initial heartbreak, Cosmo and Sam gradually regained their joy for life under the nurturing care of BARC volunteers. They resumed eating, playing, and exhibiting their true personalities. However, finding a forever home for a bonded pair of senior dogs posed a significant challenge, despite their vitality.
After a few months without success, Cosmo and Sam were transferred to P.A.W.S. Tinley Park, a no-kill animal shelter in Illinois, USA. Despite the usual difficulty in adopting senior dogs, a stroke of luck came their way in December 2018.
A Happy Ending
Eric and Tiffany Dybas, a couple grieving the loss of their own dog, came across Cosmo and Sam’s story and were immediately drawn to them. They decided to open their hearts and home to the two dogs, providing them with the love and care they deserved.
In a heartwarming turn of events, Cosmo and Sam found their forever home, bringing joy and fulfillment to their new family. Their journey from abandonment to adoption serves as a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion in providing second chances.
