Though their prevalence has increased by 72% since 1980, twins are still uncommon, occurring at a rate of about 33 per 1,000 births. Only three to four sets of identical siblings are thought to be born out of every thousand births, even among twins.
Even though the news of her twin pregnancies came with a twist—both children had Down syndrome—Savannah Combs was overjoyed to learn of them. Savannah’s devotion to her growing family was unaffected by the added workload.
The news that Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman wouldn’t live very long devastated Savannah and Justin Ackerman. Despite the disapproval they knew they would encounter from some people, Savannah was incredibly proud of her kids.
In an interview with News4JAX, she referred to them as “her little diamonds.”. She posted videos of her postpartum experience with her twins, which made it popular on TikTok, but what made it more significant was that doctors had advised her to abort the pregnancy before they were even conceived due to their diagnoses.
Knowing that her twins had Down syndrome from birth made Savannah happy. She enjoyed spending time with the babies and savoring every moment before their birth at each subsequent prenatal appointment.
Because her husband was away at boot camp at the time, Savannah spent a lot of her pregnancy alone. When she was 29 weeks along with her pregnancy, she went to the hospital and gave birth to two stunning twin daughters.
Despite the initial shock of their diagnosis, she made the decision to love them and give them the opportunities they deserved. Long after the birth of her daughters, she continued to learn valuable lessons from the experience about love and life.
The twins spent a number of weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before being discharged because they were born two months early.
Because they have different amniotic sacs but the same placenta, they are known as “mono di twins.”.
They match one another as a result.
They both have Down syndrome, which statistically occurs in one out of every two million births, making it even more unlikely that they are connected.
Savannah is committed to showing that, in spite of their unusual condition, these kids are just like any other kids. Given their strong emotions, beating hearts, and capacity for communication, she is sure they will prevail in the end.
Savannah updates her followers on TikTok so they can follow the development of all her young students and see each milestone as it is reached. She wants to convey to kids that anything is possible if they set their minds to it, just like it is for everyone else.
