The past few years have seen Johnny Depp go through arguably the most trying time in his long and illustrious career, but it seems the Pirates of the Caribbean star is on the upswing. It doesn’t seem all that long ago that fans were wondering if we would ever see Depp in another significant on-screen project. At this time last year, he and his ex-wife Amber Heard were embroiled in a public court battle while a variety of private affairs were made public.
After winning his defamation case, the actor set his sights on resuming his film career in order to make up for lost time and income. This week, he attended the Cannes Film Festival to promote his new movie, Jeanne Du Barry. Although the past two years must have been an emotional roller coaster for the 59-year-old, he will have woken up today in very good spirits after the event was a resounding success.
CANNES, FRANCE – MAY 16: Johnny Depp at “Jeanne du Barry” screening and Opening Ceremony red carpet during the 76th Annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 16, 2023 in Cannes, France. According to reports, as Johnny Depp walked the red carpet at the Palais, fans yelled his name and one woman reportedly started crying in an effort to get his attention. However, what transpired inside the venue after Depp and Jeanne Du Barry director Mawenn entered were what’s currently making headlines. The assembled audience greeted the pair with raucous applause and a standing ovation. Variety reports that it continued for seven minutes, with Depp clearly struggling to control his emotions. Mawenn addressed the audience and said:.
“I want to spend this time with Le Pacte, my producer, and my lover. It was a production that was challenging to fund, and I want to celebrate this moment with my entire team here in the theater. ”.

The Donnie Brasco actor has a devoted following who stood by him despite his legal troubles, but the accusations made against him by Amber Heard, as well as the aforementioned trial, also attracted a sizable following of haters. Numerous of those critics harshly criticized his appearance at Cannes, prompting festival director Thierry Fremaux to respond before the opening night.
“I don’t know about Johnny Depp’s reputation in the US,” Fremaux said. “To tell you the truth, there is only one rule I live by in my life: I must have the freedom to think, to speak, and to act in accordance with the law. We wouldn’t be here discussing it if Johnny Depp had been prohibited from acting in a movie or if the movie had been outlawed. He continued, “Everyone knew Johnny had made a film in France, so this [controversy] came up once the movie was announced at Cannes.
“I don’t know why she chose him, but you should ask Maiwenn that question. “As for the rest, I’m the last one who can talk about it,” she said. The only person in the world for whom this highly publicized trial held not the slightest appeal is me. “I have no idea what it’s about. Johnny Depp is an actor who is important to me. ”.
Since his notorious defamation trial against ex-wife Heard, Depp has only appeared in Jeanne du Barry. The actor may still be emotionally scarred by the court case, which was closely followed by the international media, but things do seem to be looking up for him lately. The Edward Scissorhands actor signed the largest men’s fragrance contract in history with upscale clothing company Dior, it was revealed earlier this week. Depp will work with Dior for the ensuing three years under the terms of the new contract, which is reportedly worth a cool $20 million.
