The Blue Bay Shepherd has been in development for 20 years and is still not recognized by the AKC. We can trace this dog breed back to its founder in Palm Bay, Florida. What about their parents? Blue is very rare in European German Shepherds. However, some GSD puppies are born blue, usually saddle-shaped, and lose their blue hue as they age.
The goal of breeding at the time was to introduce wolf lines into German Shepherd puppies. The ideal generation would be one with the intelligence of a wolf, fearless and unafraid of humans.
When a breeder finally found two German Shepherds with the right coat color, small ears, and most of all, calm personalities, Blue Bay Shepherd puppies were born. Breeders assumed that all traits sought in the wolf would eventually be attained and preserved. Therefore, each new Blue Bay Shepherd puppy will have an identification number and a registration certificate signed by the founder.
If you sell a dog without this certificate, you have the right to doubt whether it is a true Blue Bay or not. If you want your breed to join the American Kennel Club, extensive documentation is required to recognize the breed’s status. But this process requires too much work. So we don’t see any recognized Blue Bay in the area.
It is very easy to spot a Blue Bay Shepherd in a crowd. They have the same appearance as the wolves I mentioned, with dark blue fur and glowing eyes. The coat is slightly longer around the mane and is soft and blue to black in color. They are very serious about their appearance and they have every right to be!
German Shepherds are probably the hardest working dogs in the canine kingdom.
They are excellent service dogs for the police and military and work well as guard dogs, but were once used primarily as herding dogs. Their way of doing things goes way back!
Working German Shepherds come from all over the world, but mostly from Europe and Czechoslovakia.
