Losing a pet is a painful experience. This feeling of uncertainty is difficult to explain, and the fear of not seeing it manifests itself in a unique way. Iowa owners Cynthia and Randy Ruth woke up one day thinking their golden retriever Molly’s day would be the same as any other. Things suddenly took a turn for the worse, so they took the dog to a local groomer and made an appointment. Instead of participating in grooming sessions like before, Molly’s adventurous spirit took over. She ran so frantically through the cornfield that the groomer and her entire family were in shock.

Run away through the open door

Rose Shoemaker, a groomer at Spitfire Farm in Anita, Iowa, was shocked to see Molly run through an open gate and into the tall corn surrounding the farm.

The dog had a microchip but was not wearing a collar, making it very difficult for the owner to find him. The corn was already growing, and Molly was nowhere to be found in the field. The team at Spitfire Farm tried to lure the dog with treats and toys, but the dog did not respond. She was already far away from the scene.

Ruth’s family was extremely worried about Goldie, especially since the combines were constantly working in the cornfield. They were worried that she might be accidentally injured or crushed. The family began actively searching for her, but without success. The whole team then participated in this process.

Best community

In addition to Molly’s family and the Spitfire team, many in Anita’s community stepped up to help. The family continued to distribute flyers about the missing person and post messages on social media. As a result, a large army was called into action.

Ruth’s family said she was seen several times over the next few months, but always returned to the cornfield. One day, her owner noticed her drinking water from a puddle near the cowshed.

This was the closest Molly came to during her search. When Randy and Cynthia called her, Molly took one look at her owner and ran off. She was clearly stressed and she was in survival mode.

Molly is finally safe.

After five long months of extensive searching, finding Molly seemed like a lost cause. And, then the phone rang! Around noon, Randy got a call from a farmer, saying that Molly had been found in the field right in front of the combine.

“We found our sweet Molly! I got a call at 12:15 that she was in a cornfield in front of the combine. She was almost hit by the combine. She stood up and at a fast walk, walked ahead of the combine, and finally laid back down,” Randy wrote.

Rose and her team were so happy that after all this time, Molly was finally safe.

“My heart is over the moon with joy! Fast healing for sweet Molly,” the Spitfire Farm team wrote on Facebook.

When her family finally picked her up, Molly weighed no more than 40 pounds. She was in terrible condition, and needed immediate intervention. The vet put her on IV and antibiotics, and after some time, Molly started to get back to her normal routine.

She started going out again in her acreage, and playing with her toys.

“She loves her koala… She remembers it and carried it into her kennel last night before bed,” Randy wrote.

Randy and Cynthia are so happy to finally see Molly safe. Even though her escape was a huge shock for the family, they say they have no hard feelings about the situation. They know that Rose didn’t mean for this to happen, and they’re just glad to have their dog back.

As for Molly, the family hopes these unpredictable adventures are behind her!
