Undoubtedly, one of the best ways for a mother and child to bond is through breastfeeding. But the ideal age to wean a child off of breastmilk has never been universally agreed upon. This mother of two believes that the child should be the one to decide when to stop.
Sheryl Wynne, a West Yorkshire resident, advocates breastfeeding young children after the age at which it is considered acceptable in society. Her two sons, who are old enough to start school, are breastfed by her. The 39-year-old mother of two decided to involve her kids in the decision-making process when deciding when to wean them off of breastmilk.
She had it in her head that she would stop breastfeeding when Riley, her older son, turned three.
Riley said he wanted to nurse until he was ten years old when she told him about her plans and asked for his opinion.
She initially declined, telling the young child, “there’s no chance.
Now, Wynne wouldn’t have it any other way.
She claims that she uses it as a tool to comfort her kids, who come to her right away for solace.
Even though her kids are 5 and 6 years old and far past the toddler stage, she still feels it is perfectly normal to breastfeed them.
She believes that the deed has aided in her growing closer to her kids.
Even when they are not nursing, she continued, “They want to be with me and cuddle with me.”.

Wynne revealed that her own family was much less accepting of her breastfeeding her boys than strangers she had met online. According to her, her sons’ alleged unusual behavior was being blamed on by family and friends. In response, Wynne remarked, “People think they’re experts in other people’s children, but I’m not doing it blindly, even though I’m often going with my gut.”. She adds that when she doesn’t feel like feeding her kids, she will sometimes tell them to “get off” and say no. But whenever she makes a decision, she always makes sure to take into account their sentiments and viewpoints.
She claims that on several occasions, she even breastfed her kids in public. On the schoolyard and other public places, she breastfed the children. She acknowledged that during these events, she experienced anxiety, but she overcame it because she didn’t want her children to experience the same. She insisted on nursing both of her sons because of a negative birthing experience she had with her older son Riley. Because she was unable to properly breastfeed him, she felt guilty about it. So when she had Mylo, her younger son, she made the decision to try breastfeeding Riley once more.

Wynne is now attempting to establish a new trend where mothers should have the freedom to choose their own schedule for weaning their children. They will feel more connected to their children as a result of this. Wynne says that despite numerous attempts to undermine her, she has not let them stop her. She is adamant about creating her own schedule with her sons’ input.
