The battle with breast cancer claimed the life of 66-year-old Pegi Young. She was a musician, activist, philanthropist, former Neil Young’s wife, and mother.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the rocker and his grieving children as they learn the tragic news. Young posted a message on social media expressing their condolences.
We regret to inform you that Pegi Young, a mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, singer, activist, and co-founder of the Bridge School, passed away in her native California on January 1st, following a year-long battle with cancer. Friends and family also surrounded her at the time of her death. We request that, at this time, the families’ privacy be respected. “.
While working at a diner, Pegi met her future husband, Neil Young, when she was 22. After a brief romance, Neil immortalised their youthful passion in his 1992 song “Unknown Legend.”.
She began her solo career in 2007 with her debut self-titled album after providing backup vocals for Neil Young performances. She released five albums while leading Pegi Young and the Survivors.
Ben, the cerebral palsy-affected son of Pegi and Neil, was the impetus for Pegi to launch her activist and philanthropic campaigns in 1986. Along with Jim Forderer and Dr Marilyn Buzolich, Pegi and Neil founded the Bridge School, a facility devoted to helping kids with speech and physical challenges.
Pegi put in a lot of effort until the end of her life to raise money and awareness for students with special needs. She did this by organising the annual Bridge School Benefit Concert, which drew world-renowned rock stars to perform for the school’s students and families.
Because of her unwavering dedication to fostering greater awareness, comprehension, empathy, and compassion, the world is a better place for her.
Rest in peace, Pegi Young; you are the people’s hero.
