Paralyzed ‘skeleton dog’ found in trash feels loved one last time
Some stories break our hearts into a million pieces and Khaliya’s story is definitely one of them.

This poor puppy spent days alone, waiting for someone to come and lend her a helping hand. Khaliya was at a low point in her life when she finally caught the attention of a big-hearted passenger. He was lying in water and debris, barely able to move. All he needed in this difficult moment was a kind word, a little sympathy and a friend.

In a few hours he had the whole group!

Donna Lohmann, longtime rescuer and head rescuer at Stray Rescue in St. Louis, answered immediately when he got the call about Haliya. Donna has seen many difficult situations in her career, but she and her team were completely shocked when they first saw Halia lying in a basket. His heart immediately broke and he felt very sad for this poor girl. Kaliya’s hind legs were completely paralyzed and he could not move anything except his head.

The team suspected he had been hit by a car and dragged him as far away from the street as possible. He ended up in a nearby bush and starved to death until rescuers arrived.

Donna and her companions slowly approached Halia. He was very stressed and worried that people would hurt him, so the team first tried to gain his trust.

After a while, Donna gently wrapped him in a warm blanket and carried him to the car.

“You are so beautiful. We love you”

The team immediately took him to the facility, dried him and covered him with soft blankets. He was cold and shivering. He wanted to make sure she was warm. Then they fed him small amounts to avoid refeeding syndrome.

This beautiful girl in that shelter was called Kalia. He reminded everyone of his late dog, Harris, and gave him a name that reminded him of his lover.

The team even took her out in the sunshine and gave her a nice ride in a wagon, which she enjoyed very much.

Unfortunately, on the third day, she completely crashed. She couldn’t lift her head anymore, nor could she eat. Her strength was completely gone, and on the same day, Halia lost her life battle.

Her rescuers were heartbroken, but at the same time, they cherished her final moments that they were able to give her.

They even made sure to soothe her at her final moments with the kindest last words, ever, which were: “We are so sorry. You are so beautiful. We love you,” according to the SRSL team.

Halia crossed the rainbow bridge at peace, with her last memory being surrounded by so many friends who truly loved her. Rest in peace, good girl. Your memory will always be preserved in our hearts!
