When a severely matted ball of fur was brought to the Central Missouri Humane Society (CMHS), it left everyone at the shelter perplexed. Discovered hiding in a small dog bed in a local supermarket parking lot, the condition of the dog was shocking. The person who found her immediately realized that she needed help and brought her to the shelter.
Rescue Efforts
The dedicated team at CMHS wasted no time in attending to the distressed pup. The matted fur was so severe that it hindered her ability to walk. With fleas infesting the tangled mess, it was clear that the dog had been suffering for quite some time.
The veterinary team decided to anesthetize her to remove the matted fur safely. It was a painstaking process that took nearly three hours to complete. Additionally, her overgrown toenails, which had pierced her paw pads, were trimmed to alleviate her discomfort.
Road to Recovery
Once freed from the suffocating tangles, the dog was treated to a soothing bath. However, the ordeal was far from over. Despite her newfound cleanliness, she was still unable to walk.
X-rays revealed the extent of her suffering – her paws were deformed, and she had several broken bones. Consulting with the orthopedic department at Missouri Vet Med, the prognosis was grim. There were no viable treatment options aside from providing comfort care to keep her as pain-free as possible.
New Beginnings
Determined not to give up on her, CMHS found Precious a loving foster home. Her foster parents provided her with the care and attention she desperately needed. With time, her fur began to grow back, soft and luxurious, and she regained some strength, able to sit up on her own. Eventually, Precious found her forever home, where she was showered with love and affection, living her best life.
Advocacy and Hope
Precious’s resilience and bravery made her the face of an inspiring campaign called “Be Kind.” Through this initiative, she travels to schools and colleges, sharing her story and spreading the message of kindness and compassion towards all living beings.
Precious’s journey serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that with love and care, even the most neglected souls can find healing and happiness.
