The desires of special needs children are frequently no different from those of other kids their age. Any 17-year-old would prioritize finding a date for the school dance, so it can be a tough blow to one’s self-confidence if no one agrees to go.

Even though it may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, for a teenager going alone can be the equivalent of social ruin; failing to find a partner can therefore seriously undermine self-confidence.

This heartwarming prom story goes viral again and we all understand why

Children who have special needs, such as autism, may be especially sensitive and lack the tools necessary to fully understand everything. In this tale, Mike Larson, the father, decided to record what transpired as his autistic son Jon prepared for his high school prom. He then posted the entire account on Facebook, where it has since received millions of shares and likes. “This is my son Jon with his prom date Maddi,” Mike captioned his prom photo on Instagram. He has autism and is in his junior year. Senior Maddi asked if she could take Jon to prom a month or so ago when she came to my office (I teach at their school).”.

Mike continued, “Maddi had met Jon through a school club that fosters friendships between children with disabilities and typical children. It’s also his prom because he’s a junior, she said. He should simply be given the option to leave, in my opinion. I assured her that we would be honored to have him accompany her. Not only did Maddi choose to take Jon to her senior prom, but she also wanted him to have the best night ever. She did some research and discovered that Jon’s favorite color was orange, which allowed her to purchase a dress in that hue. She also reserved a table at the restaurant that served his favorite meals, chicken fingers, French fries, and chocolate milk, for their group (which they doubled with another couple). Maddi wanted to ask his dad if he was okay with inviting Jon to the dance before he did. According to Mike Larson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, “It was a pretty breathtaking moment for me.”.

Mike claimed that there were three justifications for his social media posting of the prom picture.

1. “to express support for special children like Jon. ”.

2.”to express support for organizations that encourage these friendships. ” .

3.”to show that there are wonderful children like Maddi working to improve the lives of others, in a time when we hear about all the terrible things happening. “.

The viral prom photo was first shared in 2013, and Mike Larson subsequently provided updates on the couple’s post-prom lives.

On Sunday, April 28, 2013, Mike Larson published a post.

He celebrated in 2019 when the post received 1 million shares and his writing was read all over the world. Additionally, he provided an update on everyone’s wellbeing: “Many have asked how Jon is doing. Still residing at home, he is healthy and content. Mike added that Maddi, who is now married, occasionally feels “embarrassed” by all the attention because she didn’t view this as anything special. “Thanks to everyone who has wished them well,” Mike wrote in the post’s closing paragraph. ”.

When Jon was given his autism diagnosis more than 16 years ago, his father imagined a number of different outcomes. One of them was that because of his autism, his son would never attend a prom. “It’s something I never thought would happen for our family, and not only did it happen, but it’s happened in such a beautiful way,” Mike Larson said. “But thanks to Maddi, Jon was not only able to go to prom, but have a wonderful night!”. “And to have it continue and improve the lives of others is more than I could have ever imagined. It will stand out as one of our best memories.
