The new Harry & Meghan docuseries revealed many fascinating details about the couple’s life, but one of the most surprising was the revelation that Tyler Perry is the godfather of their youngest child, Lilibet Diana. As viewers learned, Perry and the Royals have a close relationship that began in 2018.

At the time, Perry wrote Meghan a letter offering his support as she prepared to marry Prince Harry amidst the drama surrounding her father, Thomas Markle. In the docuseries, Perry explained that he “instantly empathized” with Meghan and the challenges she was facing.

As the years passed, Perry and Meghan began to speak more frequently, with one particularly emotional phone call leaving Meghan in tears as she opened up about her treatment by the media. “It hurt to tell Meghan that I thought her thoughts were fair,” Perry stated.

He went on to express his disappointment at the way the Palace “abused” the couple, saying “To use the institution to try and do everything a harasser would do — like, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do: we’re going to cut off the money, we’re not going to leave you security, we’re going to do everything to make you conform and come back.”

After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step away from their royal obligations and move to the United States, Tyler Perry grew to admire and respect the couple. In a remarkable act of kindness, Perry offered them the use of one of his Los Angeles homes as a safe haven during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Royal couple accepted Perry’s offer, and as Harry recounted, they were able to “enjoy a small slice of normal life” while living at Perry’s home, away from the public eye.

The couple first mentioned Perry in their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, in which Meghan explained, “We needed a somewhere to live, and he [Tyler Perry] offered his protection as well, so that gave us time to figure out what we were going to do.”

As a token of their appreciation for Perry’s hospitality and friendship, Harry and Meghan asked him to be the godfather of their youngest child, Lilibet Diana. Perry, understandably, was speechless at the honor.

When Tyler Perry was approached by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to be the godfather of their youngest child, Lilibet Diana, he was taken aback. “‘Okay, what’s going on?’” he recalls thinking. He took some time to process the honor and then called them back with a condition.

“I called them back and said, ‘Uh, hold on a second — does this mean we have to go over [to the United Kingdom] and do all of that in church with [the royal family] and figure all of that out? ‘Cause I don’t want to do that,” Perry said. He suggested a private ceremony in the United States instead.

The first three episodes of the six-episode docuseries about Harry and Meghan premiered on December 8th, and the remaining three episodes were released last week. All six episodes are now available on Netflix, and they provide an in-depth look at the couple’s life today but also leave some questions unanswered.
